        • TV picks: Ally McBeal could win another best-comedy Emmy for tonight's season premiere in which Ally (Calista Flockhart) has a steamy affair in a car wash, then counsels a rich client's daughter about to be married (9 p.m., Channels 19, 45).

        • TV Critic John Kiesewetter also says PBS explores the Wonders of the African World with Henry Louis Gates Jr., a six-hour documentary hosted by the Harvard professor (9-11 p.m. today on Channels 16 and 48; 10 p.m.-midnight today on Channel 54; 9-11 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday on all three channels.)         • Backstreet fans: The Backstreet Boys are headed to town and here's a chance to catch the latest dish and swoon at photos of the fab five before their sold out Nov. 15 Firstar Center date: Backstreet Boys: Backstage Pass: Now and Forever: Millennium Scrapbook by Lauren Allison (Scholastic Inc.; $5.99).
