        • www.cdc.gov Operated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Basic health information and explanations. Updates on seasonal issues (influenza, food poisonings, swimming safety).

        • www.fda.gov, The Web site of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Easy-to-search information about drugs, cosmetics and food safety.

        • www.nlm.nih.gov/locatorplus The National Library of Medicine gives access to more than 5.3 million books, journals, images and other resources. Search by topic, category, subject and e-mail results to yourself.

        • www.healthfinder.gov A card catalog to government health information, with links to other resources. Maintained by the U.S. Surgeon General/Department of Health and Human Services.

        • www.NetWellness.com A cooperative site maintained by the University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve. It's updated daily and features a question-answer section handled by experts. Link to other community resources, too, such as the Cincinnati Drug & Poison Information Center.

Nutrition
        • www.navigator.tufts.edu A comprehensive guide to nutrition-related Web sites. From here, you can find other sites recommended by nutrition experts at Tufts University.

Alternative health
        • www.herbalgram.org The Web site of the American Botanical Council, a non-profit group based in Austin, Texas, that offers information about herbs — their uses, preservation, growth, endangered status. ABC also publishes HerbalGram magazine.

        • www.AltMedAdvisor.Com The site of the Alternative Medicine Advisor, a monthly newsletter published in New York and reviewed by traditionally and holistically trained doctors, with up-to-date news briefs, research and findings about all kinds of alternative and complementary health.

        • www.geocities.com/HotSprings/1158 A gem site from Shirley's Wellness Cafe in Hollywood, with tons of holistic, non-traditional health information for humans and pets/animals.

Mental health
        • www.nami.org, The site of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, an advocacy non-profit group based in Arlington VA for people with mental illness, their family members and friends. A great starting place for someone recently diagnosed with a mental illness.

        • www.psychcentral.com Maintained since 1995 by Dr. John Grohol of Austin who has a clearinghouse for information on all sorts of mental health topics, including chat rooms, search formats and other resources.

Sexual health
        • www.iwannaknow.org Is geared to teens and others with questions about sexuality, birth control, puberty, sexually transmitted diseases and topics that parents are often reluctant to discuss (or can't answer). It's maintained by the non-profit American Social Health Association.

Women's health
        • www.womenshealth.com By Madison Pharmacy Associates and Women's Health America, provides information and products dealing with menopause, hormones and hormone replacement, natural hormones, nutrition, stress management and more. WHA has a long history of providing information and services to women from its Madison, Wis., headquarters.

Men's health
        • www.menshealth.com The online version of Men's Health magazine, with information on current and previous articles on a variety of health, lifestyle, sexuality, fitness, nutrition, stress and “guy” topics.
