Big upsets in boys soccer sectional

After a night of upsets, the pairings are set for the Division I boys sectional championship games Saturday.

Unseeded McNicholas pulled off the biggest upset with a 2-0 victory over top-seeded Moeller at Hopewell Elementary in the Cincinnati I sectional. The Rockets will play LaSalle at Mason for the title.

Second-half goals by Mi chael Zoller and Chris Backscheider lifted the Rockets.

Loveland, the No.2 team, fell to Lakota East 4-0 at the Forest Hills Soccer Stadium. Lakota East meets third-seeded Turpin at Fairfield for the Cincinnati II sectional title.

“Some would look at this as an upset, but we play a very strong schedule,” Lakota East coach Danny Landrum said. “We played good defense and held them to five shots. This was our fifth shutout in a row.”

T.J. Myers and Matt Chiodi both scored twice.

Turpin is the highest seeded team remaining. The Spartans rolled to an impressive 4-2 victory over Roger Bacon. Andy Listerman, Derek Grannen, Tim Keate and Jordan Bell scored.

LaSalle remained the hottest team in Cincinnati with a 3-1 victory over Lakota West at Fairfield.

Danny Barraza, Jeff Sucher and Nick Thompson scored for the Lancers, a team that has never advanced past the second round.
