p8 Man critically hurt in cycle-SUV crash

MONTGOMERY — A 45-year-old Milford man was in critical condition at University Hospital Wednesday after his motorcycle was struck by a sports utility vehicle on Pfeiffer Road about 7:20 a.m.

Montgomery Police Officer Jerry Beitman asked any witnesses to the accident to call police at 985-1600 because investigators are uncertain what direction the motorcycle was traveling on Pfeiffer Road before it was struck.

Police identified the victim as Michael Baum, of 800 block of U.S. 50..

Officers said Mr. Baum was riding his 1991 Harley-Davidson motorcycle in front of the exit drive from the Tri-Health Fitness & Health Pavilion, 6200, Pfeiffer Road, just west of Interstate 71. It was hit by a Lincoln Navigator being driven by Melissa Rippe, 48, of Butterworth Road, Maineville.

        .

Both vehicles ended up in a paved island separating the east and westbound lanes of Pfeiffer Road, the sergeant said. The accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.

Man must stand trial trial in wife's stabbing
LEBANON — A jury will get the chance to decide whether a Mason man was insane when he allegedly tried to kill his estranged wife last June.

Frank Moore, 39, who has raised an insanity defense in the attempted murder of Tammy Moore, was found competent Wednesday to stand trial.

Jailed on a $250,000 bond, Mr. Moore is accused of stabbing Mrs. Moore in the throat, abdomen and back and beating her with a rock when the two met June 29 to talk over marital problems at Little Miami State Park.

A motorist found Mrs. Moore stumbling out of the park on Old 3C Highway south of Socialville-Fosters Road around 10 p.m. She identified Mr. Moore as her attacker.

Mr. Moore told police he last saw his wife at 9:15 p.m. that day when he dropped her off at a Mason bar. But he said he was unsure whether he was involved in the attack “because he blacks out sometimes when he drinks,” according to a court affidavit.

Park-and-ride was a hit at Tall Stacks
Park-and-ride lots set up for Tall Stacks '99 got twice the use they did the last time the event was in town.

Metro's lots at Western Hills Plaza, General Electric in Evendale and at Eastgate Mall served 101,000 riders over the five-day event. That nearly doubled the 49,000 people who used park and ride shuttles the during the last Tall Stacks in 1995.

Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) had 23,487 passengers use its lots set up at Northern Kentucky University and at the Biggs in Florence.

The crowds were so big that the Biggs lot was full and drivers had to park at Turfway Park race track on Friday and Saturday, said Gina Douthat, TANK spokeswoman.

TANK's Southbank Shuttle that circulates among Covington, Newport and downtown Cincinnati for 25 cents had nearly double the riders it has had in its busiest week. Southbank Shuttle carried 27,541 passengers during Tall Stacks. Before that, the busiest week was June 9-17 when 10,979 passengers used the shuttle.

At times, TANK had to add larger buses, which can hold almost twice the passengers as shuttles, to keep up with the demand.

Student fights expulsion over knife
SANDUSKY, Ohio — A high school student expelled for bringing a pocket knife to class has sued the city school district to get back in, saying that its definition of a “knife” is too broad.

Jason Kresser, 18, said in the lawsuit that he used the knife as a tool for cleaning golf shoes and golf clubs, not as a weapon.

The school district policy says “the definition of a knife includes but is not limited to a cutting instrument consisting of a sharp blade fastened to a handle.”

The lawsuit said “virtually any type of tool can be fit within the definition,” and calls it “unconstitutionally overbroad.”

Superintendent Rick Sulewski said on Monday that the district is within its rights to suspend pupils who bring weapons to school.

Man seeking vandal is killed by train
BROOK PARK, Ohio — A man looking for a youth who threw a rock at his car from a railroad overpass was killed by a train.

Robert Sutkowy, 45, of Kent, was hit by a CSX train on Tuesday in this Cleveland suburb.

Mr. Sutkowy didn't hear the oncoming train's whistle because of the noise from another train headed in the opposite direction, Police Chief Thomas Dease said.

A police officer had earlier found a 12-year-old Brook Park boy suspected of throwing rocks onto the roadway and had taken him away. The boy was released to his parents pending a review by a prosecutor.

1 killed, 3 injured in Medina plane wreck
MEDINA, Ohio — One person was killed and three were injured in a plane crash Wednesday night in Sharon Township, near Medina Municipal Airport, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Television station WJW reported that the pilot of the single-engine Cessna apparently was attempting to land about 6:30 p.m. when the plane clipped a power line and came down short of the runway into a cornfield.

Patrol Sgt. Monte Morgan told WJW that a witness used a cell phone to call for help.

One of the injured was taken by helicopter to Akron General Medical Center. Elizabeth Schafer, of Lakewood, is in guarded condition, according to the hospital.

Two men were in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, according to a nursing supervisor.
