Ohio State cornerback Ahmed Plummer's frustrating senior season brightened Wednesday when the Wyoming High graduate was named one of 12 semifinalists for the Thorpe Award.
The Thorpe, awarded to the nation's best defensive back, went to Ohio State's Antoine Winfield last year.
A three-year starter and Ohio State's 1999 defensive captain, Plummer has made 33 consecutive starts, with the Buckeyes winning 26. He leads the '99 Buckeyes (5-3, 2-2 Big Ten) with three interceptions and has five pass break-ups and 32 tackles, 27 solo.
This season has flown by, Plummer said. It's hard to believe we're down to my last four games. I'm just enjoying every game now.
Plummer has 12 career interceptions and 145 career tackles, third among current Buckeyes. He is also a two-time District IV Academic All-American, two-time All-Academic Big Ten honoree and is Ohio State's representative for a National Football Foundation scholarship.
The three finalists for the Thorpe Award will be named Nov.22, with the winner announced during ESPN's college football awards show Dec.9. Plummer's competition includes Tyrone Carter of Minnesota, Mario Edwards of Florida State, Deon Grant of Tennessee, David Macklin of Penn State and Aric Morris of Michigan State.
