Ohio football picks
By Dave Schutte
Lebanon (8-1) vs. Mason (7-2)
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. today
WHERE: Mason Stadium, 770 Mason-Montgomery Road, Mason.
WHAT TO WATCH: After losing the first two games, the Comets are now in position to claim a Division I playoff berth with a victory.
Lebanon has already clinched a Division II playoff berth but the Warriors need a victory to secure home field advantage for the first-round game.
PICK: Mason
Winton Woods (6-3) vs. Fairfield (7-2)
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. today
WHERE: Fairfield Stadium, 1 Stadium Drive, Fairfield.
WHAT TO WATCH: A winner over Harrison last week, Winton Woods needs a victory to get back into the Division I playoff picture.
If the Warriors expect to win, the defense must stop tailback Earl Haynes, who has rushed for 1,794 yards on 284 carries. Quarterback Todd Bridge has completed 52-of-111 passes for 695 yards.
Winton Woods has played well in big games and this is the biggest of the season for the Warriors.
PICK: Fairfield
Walnut Hills (5-4) vs. Western Hills (6-3)
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. today
WHERE: Western Hills Stadium, 2144 Ferguson Road.
WHAT TO WATCH: The Queen City Conference championship is at stake with Western Hills winning it outright with a victory while Walnut Hills could share the title with a win.
Western Hills prefers a rushing attack with junior tailback Kevin Furlow the major threat while Walnut Hills relies on the passing game of quarterback Quincy Barrett (68-of-153, 1,022 yards passing).
Pick: Western Hills.
Elder (7-1) vs. Oak Hills (7-2)
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. today
WHERE: Oak Hills Stadium, 3200 Ebenezer Road, Bridgetown.
WHAT TO WATCH: Though both teams have already clinched a Division I playoff berth, it should be an outstanding battle between two West Side schools. Oak Hills hasn't beaten Elder since 1987.
Elder had last week off after a 30-13 loss to St. Xavier. Oak Hills is coming off an impressive 37-13 victory over McNicholas.
Tailback Kyle Koester (173 carries for 1,053 yards) is one of Elder's weapons along with quarterback Collin Carey (77-of-137 for 1,350 yards).
Oak Hills also features a diversified offense led by sophomore quarterback Rik Menchen.
If Elder has recovered from the loss to St. X, the Panthers should win.
PICK: Elder.
