PBS host, party planner make area appearances

Visits by well-known names in gardening and home entertaining will be sponsored next month by the Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati.

Wednesday, Roger Swain, host of PBS' Victory Garden show, will make two appearances at the center, 2715 Reading Road, Avondale:

        • During a tea, 2-3:30 p.m., Mr. Swain will discuss how gardens create opportunities for generosity. He also will answer gardening questions. Cost: $15 for Civic Garden Center members, $20 for non-members.

        • At 7:30 p.m. he will explore animal-plant relationships. Cost: $25 for members, $30 for non-members.

Mr. Swain, known as the “man with the red suspenders,” has been host of Victory Garden for 13 years. A biologist, horticulturist, writer and storyteller, he is science editor of Horticulture magazine.

On Nov. 20, celebrity party planner Colin Cowie will speak at a luncheon fund-raiser for the garden center at the Hyatt Regency, downtown. His topic: easy entertaining.

The event will begin with a 11 a.m. champagne reception, followed at 11:30 a.m. by a demonstration by floral designer Keith Mueller. The luncheon will be at noon, followed at 1 p.m. by Mr. Cowie's talk.

Mr. Cowie is principal of Colin Cowie Lifestyle, an event planning, catering and design firm with offices in Los Angeles and New York. He is an author of two books and contributing editor of InStyle and Honeymoon magazines.

Luncheon guests will receive a ticket to the Garden Market and Antique Show, running Nov. 19-21 at the Albert B. Sabin Convention Center.

Mr. Cowie will autograph his books at the show from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Nov. 20. Throughout the show, visitors can view tables set with eight place settings of Lenox china, crystal and flatware designed by Mr. Cowie.

Luncheon tickets: $75 ($125 benefactor and $1,500 sponsor table).

Tickets and information for the three events: 221-0981.
