Notre Dame ousted in Kentucky volleyball

BY MARK SCHMETZER

UNION — The matchup was better suited for the finals, but the packed house at Gray Middle School had to settle for the first round.

In a battle of two of Kentucky's top three volleyball teams, Louisville Presentation lost the first game but bounced back to win the next two and defeat Notre Dame 9-15, 15-9, 15-10 in the first round of the state tournament Friday night.

The Pandas were the state's second-ranked team; the Toppers were No.3.

“We've never beaten Notre Dame,” Presentation coach Barbara Wine said. “This is the team we were hoping to face all year. “I just think we decided to play more aggressively. We served more aggressively, and we blocked better after the first game.”

Notre Dame finished with a 32-8 record. Presentation (39-8) advanced to face Louisville Male in a quarterfinal match at 10:15a.m. today at Ryle High School.

Simon Kenton and Campbell County advanced with straight-set victories. The Lady Pioneers (29-12) beat Lexington Paul Dunbar (25-9) 15-5, 15-3, and the Camels beat Bullitt East (18-9) 15-4, 15-4.

Campbell County (39-2) earned the unenviable task of facing Louisville Assumption, the No.1 team in the state and No.2 team in the nation. Assumption (40-1) beat an overmatched Lexington Henry Clay (28-14) team 15-1, 15-1.

Northern Kentucky's fourth representative, St.Henry, lost to Mercy 15-5, 15-8.

St.Henry (21-16), which was ranked No.14 in the state, beat No.5 Mercy (26-12) in a regular-season matchup, but the Lady Crusaders couldn't pull off another upset Friday.

“You can't win when you play like that,” St.Henry coach Maureen Kaiser said. “We were scared. We played tentative. We had a lot of unforced errors. It's not all of a sudden. We've been playing like that all season. It's just lack of experience.”

Male (31-12) and Eastern (34-13) squared off in the best match of the night with Male prevailing 15-12, 12-15, 15-12.

The tournament continues with quarterfinal matches at 9a.m. and 10:15a.m. today at Gray Middle School and Ryle High School. The semifinals are 2p.m. and 3:30p.m. at Ryle, and the championship match is scheduled for 7:30 tonight at Ryle.
