Man indicted in September attack

BY SHEILA McLAUGHLIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LEBANON — Officials say a Franklin man who got steamed last winter at a tow truck driver apparently stewed about it for nine months, then boiled over.

He was indicted Monday on criminal charges of felonious assault, and the investigation of the case also led to marijuana charges against John D. Griffin, 35.

Nine months after his car was towed from a ditch on police orders, Mr. Griffin is accused of returning to McDaniel Towing in Franklin and attacking owner Leonard McDaniel with a knife.

A grand jury indicted Mr. Griffin on the assault charge Monday, as well as an additional felony count of possession of marijuana. Out on bail, he is due in Warren County Common Pleas Court for ar raignment on Nov. 12. Mr. Griffin could not be reached.

Warren County Prosecutor Tim Oliver said Mr. Griffin had threatened Mr. McDaniel at the time the car was towed during a January snowstorm. It wasn't clear why he was so upset at the tow truck driver. On Sept. 30, Mr. Griffin appeared at McDaniel's Towing on Mentz Road.

“The operator walked over to him and he sliced him with a knife,” Mr. Oliver said.

Mr. McDaniel was slashed on both arms and on his chest. He has recuperated and was back to work Monday, but was unavailable for comment.

The marijuana drug charge stemmed from a police search for the knife at Mr. Griffin's Tewart Road home.

Mr. Oliver said officers confiscated nearly 3 pounds of the illegal plant, some of it harvested and drying, and some growing in Mr. Griffin's yard.
