TRISTATE MARKET SPOTLIGHT

OK on generic boosts Duramed

Duramed Pharmaceuticals gained 75 cents, or 9.2 percent, to close Tuesday at $8.871/2.

The Pleasant Ridge firm said Tuesday that it received approval to sell a generic version of the Ogen brand estrogen-replacement drug made by Upjohn Co. It will begin shipping its estropipate tablets for the treatment of menopausal symptoms in mid-2000.

Duramed had distributed the drug through an agreement with Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical. Approval of Duramed's abbreviated new drug application for estropipate allows it to sell its own formulation.
