Fire routs three Avondale families

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Three Avondale families were left homeless late Wednesday after a three-alarm fire ravaged their Clinton Springs building, causing at least $100,000 in damage.

        No injuries were reported.

Fire officials were called to 889 Clinton Springs Ave. shortly after 8:30 p.m.

A blaze that started on the second floor spread to the third floor and the roof of the three-apartment structure, said Assistant Cincinnati Fire Chief of Operations David Hill.

A cause had not been determined late Wednesday, but fire investigators were looking at the possibility a space heater may have been too close to furniture.

The building had been extensively remodeled, Assistant Chief Hill said, which made access difficult.

About 55 firefighters worked in shifts to bring the blaze under control.

Schyrl Patrick, 38, and her two sons, Charles, 13, and Gary, 2, were in their first-floor apartment at the time of the blaze.

“I don't know what happened. I just heard someone knocking on the door and I told my sons to get out,” she said, adding that neighbors said the fire started in a bedroom on the north side of the building.

Neighbors called the fire department and helped get families out of the building.

The blaze was extinguished at about 9:20 p.m.
