Team cleans up by picking up

BY ANDREA TORTORA
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON — The Holmes High cross-country team turned its practice route into a garbage route Wednesday, picking up trash for cash.

Eight miles of fast-paced community service yielded 30 bags of trash, some tires, an automobile exhaust system and $1,000.

The “garbage run” is the team's fund-raiser.

Unlike football or basketball, cross-country events do not generate revenue. That leaves the team wanting when it comes to extra expenses such as food, travel, T-shirts and awards.

“We run through the neighborhoods of Covington and Latonia and we see lots of garbage,” Coach Rob Hamann said. “People see us all the time out there. We just thought it important to do something more community oriented.”

Runners — in grades 6-12 — got pledges from family, friends and neighbors for every mile each student cleaned. Mr. Hamann said pledges added up to $1,000, with Matt Winkler bringing in $175 and Stephanie Dziczek and Tammy Regensburger raising $100 each.

Students earning the most money won a varsity jacket. But they had to work hard. The route students run is 8 miles long.

The team left the Holmes campus Wednesday in two groups. On Wednesday, one team headed north on Scott Street to the Ohio River. The other went south on Ky. 16 to Church Street and Taylor Mill.

Coaches and parents followed in cars to collect the garbage bags as the runners picked up trash.

“I guess this can be fun, but it's also a little nasty,” said Matt, who is in sixth grade.

Wearing their uniforms and carrying black plastic garbage bags, team members were easy to spot.

“I think this is a great way to help the community,” said Stephanie, who is in 10th grade.

“Plus, this is a fun run with no pressure on time.”
