Boater charged in fatal collision
NEWPORT A Hyde Park man who was operating a speedboat on the Ohio River that struck another boat Aug. 16, resulting in the death of three people, has been charged in Campbell County with manslaughter and assault.
Assistant Campbell Commonwealth Attorney Jack Porter said Friday that 32-year-old Brian Brunen entered a not-guilty plea at his arraignment Thursday in Campbell District Court on three counts of second-degree manslaughter, single counts of second- and fourth-degree assault, and one count of operating a boat under the influence.
The manslaughter charges and second-degree assault are felonies punishable by five to 10 years in prison. The other two charges are misdemeanors.
Scott Martini; his wife, Pamela; and friend Ken Middendorf were killed when Mr. Brunen's boat allegedly slammed into the rear of the Martini boat near the Watertown Marina in Dayton, Ky. Mr. Middendorf's wife, Kim, and Nicole Purvis, a passenger in Mr. Brunen's boat, were injured.
Kentucky Water Patrol Officer Doug Bryant said he found empty and full beer cans in Mr. Brunen's Thunderbird Formula boat.
