Transformer fire huts movie complex
SPRINGDALE A transformer fire forced cancellation of evening movie showings Tuesday at the Showcase Cinemas.
A transformer in the theater complex short-circuited and caught fire about 5:30 p.m., said Fire Capt. Frank Sutton. The fire in the 8-foot-by-8-foot transformer was quickly extinguished, but all power to the complex had to be turned off while it was repaired, Capt. Sutton said.

Lawyer handled cases while under indictment
Prosecutors say a Cincinnati attorney defied a court order this month by practicing law while charged with stealing from an elderly client.
Attorney Ken Schachleiter, 57, was indicted earlier this year on six counts of forgery, two counts of tampering with records and one count of theft.
Prosecutors say he took money from the estate of Cecilia McKinley over 19 months during the past two years. They say he also forged Ms. McKinley's signature on papers filed in probate court.
Hamilton County Prosecutor Mike Allen said he learned this week that Mr. Schachleiter has filed court papers this month in two separate cases, despite a court order not to practice law. Mr. Allen said his office will ask Common Pleas Judge Fred Cartolano to revoke Mr. Schachleiter's bond today.
Woman, 58, arrested for handgun in purse
A Cincinnati woman was arrested Tuesday, charged with smuggling a handgun into the Hamilton County Courthouse.
Lozena Fielden, 58, of the 4000 block of Franklin Avenue, is charged with carrying a concealed firearm and conveyance of weapons into a courthouse. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in jail.
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Barnett said an X-ray machine at the courthouse entrance revealed a .22-caliber handgun and ammunition in her purse.
He said Ms. Fielden was headed to a court appearance by her son, Mark Fielden, in a domestic violence case.
Woman admits she helped burn churches
INDIANAPOLIS A Georgia woman linked to a string of church fires across the country pleaded guilty Tuesday to helping a former boyfriend ignite five such fires between 1994 and 1999.
Angela Wood, 24, of Athens, Ga., pleaded guilty in federal court in Indianapolis to one count of conspiracy to commit arson and church arson and four counts of church arson.
She also pleaded guilty to one count each of the use of fire to commit a felony and arson of a building used in interstate commerce.
Formal charges and a plea agreement were filed last Thursday. In the deal, Ms. Wood agreed to testify against Jay Scott Ballinger, a former boyfriend thought responsible for dozens of church arsons.
Also, attorney's offices in 19 states have agreed not to prosecute Ms. Wood for any other church arsons she allegedly helped Mr. Ballinger commit.
Turnpike renovations keep motorists in mind
TOLEDO, Ohio The renovation of travel centers along the Ohio Turnpike will be staggered next summer so that motorists aren't faced with delays and long lines at other plazas.
Turnpike officials don't want to close four travel centers at the same busy time as they did this past summer, said Gino Zomparelli, the turnpike's executive director.
This summer, motorists complained about long waits for gas and lengthy lines at restrooms on the turnpike because of construction at travel plazas in Cuyahoga County and Sandusky County.
Fear of fire prompts burning bans in Ind.
Unseasonably warm and dry weather has raised the possibility of brush fires across Indiana, prompting several counties to reintroduce the open-burning bans that were lifted just last month.
Officials in Boone, Brown, Monroe, Owen and several other counties have issued open-burning bans, saying the record warm temperatures expected to continue the rest of the week raise the possibility of fires.
In addition, open burning is banned at the Hoosier National Forest in southern Indiana and at the Morgan-Monroe State Forest.
Baby starves after mother dies at home
MENTOR, Ohio A 10-month-old boy starved to death after his mother died, apparently of natural causes, the Lake County coroner said.
Firefighters found the bodies of Darlene Kappelman, 43, and her son, Antonio, after they broke into the apartment Saturday night to investigate complaints about an odor. Ms. Kappelman, dressed for bed, was found in the bathroom. The baby was on his stomach in his crib.
Ms. Kappelman was last confirmed to be alive Oct. 29, when she wrote a check and had medication prescribed.
Coroner Salvatore Rizzo said the boy probably died Thursday.
