TRISTATE MARKET SPOTLIGHT

Omnicare advances 20 percent

Shares of Omnicare Inc. gained $1.811/4, or 20 percent, to close Thursday at $10.871/2.

The Covington company provides professional pharmacy and data-management services to skilled nursing, assisted-living and other institutional health-care providers.

Such providers stand to receive $11 billion more in Medicare payments under an agreement reached Thursday between White House and congressional negotiators. Caregivers have argued that cuts imposed in 1997 have put too big a squeeze on the fees they get to care for the elderly and disabled.
