NEWPORT Sunday night meant the realization of a dream for 23-year-old Jolene Youngster, who went from being Miss Glasgow to Miss Kentucky USA at the Syndicate Restaurant.
Her crowning culminated two days of competition and topped off 18 years of pageant work for Ms. Youngster, a 1998 graduate of Western Kentucky University who works at her parents' agriculture business.
Sunday's triumph is her ticket to February's Miss USA 2000 pageant in Branson, Mo., and perhaps the Miss Universe competition.
I'm so excited! Ms. Youngster gushed, wearing her new crown and red-lined sash. I'm overwhelmed. I feel so honored. I would just like to be a positive role model.
Twenty-seven women between the ages of 19 and 26 vied for the Miss Kentucky USA 2000 title. Judging was based on interviews and swimsuit and evening gown competitions. At Sunday's event, the top 10 finalists answered two questions each in the interview portion.
When asked whom she would most like to meet, Ms. Youngster said Diane Sawyer because of her compassion, class and genuine interest in everyone. When asked for a role model besides her parents, Ms. Youngster cited her grandmother.
