Glenn center loses $10M bid in House
The Associated Press
COLUMBUS Supporters of a public policy institute honoring Sen. John Glenn called the U.S. House of Representatives decision not to spend $10 million toward the project at Ohio State University a minor setback.
The House action is a disappointment, but it doesn't eliminate the John Glenn Institute. That federal funding will be coming, just not as soon as we had hoped, said Herb Asher, interim director of the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy.
The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday voted 291-128 against legislation that would have approved $31 million to set up public-policy institutes at Ohio State and four other universities in honor of Mr. Glenn and four other former senators.
Mr. Asher called the move a delay, not a defeat.
With or without the money, the institute is alive and well and doing things. We've been moving forward on many fronts, including programming and fund-raising, and we're not going to stop, Mr. Asher said Thursday.
The Senate already had passed the bill that called for the money to be appropriated in the 2001 budget year.
Rep. Deborah Pryce, R-Perry Township, co-sponsored the bill with Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio.
Ms. Pryce blames the bill's failure mostly on poor timing. Congress is in its final days of setting a budget and tension is thick, she said Thursday.
