School district fires treasurer, but won't say why

TRENTON — Mary Martin will return to Edgewood schools as interim treasurer following the school board's unanimous vote this week to fire C.G. Uebel.

School officials declined to say what prompted Ms. Uebel's dismissal.

The board this month asked Ms. Uebel to resign and she refused, said her attorney, C.J. Schmidt.

“She had no opportunity to argue her case or present her side of the case,” Mr. Schmidt said. “As far as we know, she was performing well. We never got any explanation of what she was not doing. Earlier this spring she was given a set of goals and responsibilities. She's met them.”

Board member Sharon Anderson declined to discuss the reason for Ms. Uebel's dismissal, except to say it had nothing to do with misuse of funds or illegal acts by Ms. Uebel, whose contract runs through the end of next year.

“There was a parting of the ways,” she said. “We're going to try to get a treasurer in as soon as possible.”

She referred further questions to the board's attorney, who could not be reached for comment.

“It came suddenly,” Ms. Uebel said Thursday. “I am applying for other positions.”

She was hired as treasurer 15 months ago, replacing Mrs. Martin, who retired after serving almost 10 years in the district. Before working in Edgewood, Ms. Uebel was treasurer of the Clermont Northeastern and Western Brown school districts.

The Edgewood board is accepting applications for the treasurer's position and hopes to hire a permanent treasurer before year's end, Mrs. Anderson said.

Until then, Mrs. Martin, hired at a special board meeting Wednesday, has agreed to work on a part-time basis. Her hourly rate will be determined at Monday's school board meeting.
