Fishing boat lost when fumes ignite
A 19-foot fishing boat was destroyed early Saturday when it exploded and burned along the Ohio River.
No injuries were reported.
Cincinnati firefighters were called to the riverfront near the Showboat Majestic shortly after 7 a.m., said Chief Howard Reed of Cincinnati Fire District 1. Gasoline fumes from the fishing boat ignited when its owner started the engine, the chief said.
Seventeen firefighters helped extinguish the blaze. The boat, a 1997 Roughneck, was considered destroyed, with damage estimated at $22,000.
Jewelry, cash taken from Sayler Park home
An armed intruder made off with more than $10,000 in jewelry and cash after forcibly entering a Sayler Park home Friday, police said.
Cincinnati police said the intruder entered the home shortly after 3 p.m. and, using a gun, forced the occupants into a bedroom.
The home was in the 6800 block of River Road. No injuries were reported, and the intruder has not been arrested.
Discarded cigarette cause of house fire
DEERFIELD TWP. A family was left homeless Saturday when a morning fire destroyed their house on Daisy Road. All three occupants of the house escaped unharmed, firefighters said.
Six fire crews were called to the home about 8 a.m. Damage was well above $100,000, said Deerfield Township Deputy Fire Chief Nathan Bromen.
A discarded cigarette left on a paper towel was thought to have caused the blaze, which started in an enclosed porch of the residence.
The cigarette apparently ignited the paper towels and spread to a liquid oxygen system one of the occupants had for medical reasons, causing it to explode, Chief Bromen said. The oxygen caused the fire to spread very quickly.
He said a smoke detector in the home woke up the occupants, Lannie and Sandy Casey and their son Randy Hanifen. The fire remains under investigation.
