Lebanon teachers OK contract


Pay goes up 13.6 percent over 3 years

        LEBANON — Teachers in the fast-growing Lebanon schools will receive a 13.6 percent pay increase over the next three years, under a new master contract ratified by teachers and approved by the board last week.

        The agreement provides additional time for staff development and calls for binding arbitration on contract issues with the losing party paying the costs of the arbitrator.

        “I personally believe this is a good contract and sends a clear signal to the staff that we respect them as educators,” Superintendent James W. “Bill” Sears said. “This brings them in line with the salaries of teachers in neighboring districts.”

        The pay increase moves Lebanon teachers' salaries to fourth-highest in Warren County, behind starting salaries for teachers in the Mason, Springboro and Kings districts, Mr. Sears said.

        Teachers will receive a 5.2 percent pay increase this year, retroactive to Sept. 1; 4 percent next year; and 4.4 percent in the third year. With the increase, a first-year teacher with a bachelor's will earn $26,125 this year, district spokeswoman Carole Dorn said.

        A committee made up of teachers from every building and administrators will form to gauge teacher interest and need for professional development and then plan sessions on those topics, Mr. Sears said.

        The new contract adds one day for training at the beginning of the school year before students report. It also calls for teachers to spend four hours this year and eight hours in subsequent years outside the workday attending development programs.

        “We've made some great strides and look forward to continuing this positive direction with Mr. Sears and the board,” said Esther Larson, co-president of the Lebanon Education Association, the teachers' union.
