Magloire, UK caught in NCAA Web
Center forced to take down site to avoid violation
The Associated Press
LEXINGTON, Ky. Oft-disciplined Kentucky center Jamaal Magloire has been suspended again, this time from cyberspace.
School officials moved quickly last week to shut down Magloire's personal Web site www.magloire.com after learning it contained links to commercial Web sites, a potential violation of NCAA rules.
Those do cause a problem with his amateur status, so we actually declared him ineligible on Thursday and petitioned the NCAA to reinstate him, which they did immediately, said Sandy Bell, Kentucky's NCAA compliance director. It's not the first one they've dealt with on those issues.
Bell said she was concerned about links on the site that allowed viewers to jump to sites operated by college basketball magazines and other profit-making enterprises.
Those would be private endorsements, she said.
On the Web site, which had been up and running since last month, Magloire said he hoped to be able to deal directly with his fans without any filtering by the media. The site contained a photo gallery, a history of Magloire's high school career, his college statistics and a place where fans could e-mail Magloire.
When asked about the shutdown, Magloire said he planned to have the site operational again soon. But Kentucky officials made that sound unlikely.
We don't see a need for it, and Jamaal doesn't either, Bell said. It's not something he has time for.
Asked when he thought www.magloire.com would be up again, basketball spokesman Brooks Downing joked, April.
