Miami 75, IUPUI 59
Taylor, Stewart provide 1-2 punch
The Cincinnati Enquirer
INDIANAPOLIS Miami University bounced back from its opening loss to Temple with a 75-59 victory over Indiana University-Purdue University here Wednesday night.
The RedHawks, 1-1, got 22 points from Anthony Taylor and a 20 points from Jason Stewart.
But the biggest boost came from Mike Ensminger, the junior from Oak Hills. Ensminger had a career-high 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, eight rebounds and five assists.
IUPUI, 0-2, is in its second year of Division I play, but it hung with Evansville in its opener on the road.
IUPUI is a decent club, MU coach Charlie Coles said on his postgame radio show. For us to come over here at this stage of the season is a challenge.
Miami controlled the game from the start, taking a 37-24 halftime lead behind 11 points from Stewart and nine from Ensminger.
We got some inside baskets, Coles said. That was big. We have to do that.
The RedHawks blew it open in the second half by holding the Jaguars scoreless for a 51/2-minute stretch early in the second half. That allowed Miami to build a 59-34 lead.
IUPUI would make only seven field goals in the second half. Miami held IUPUI to 38 percent shooting for the night.
We played better defense in the second half, Coles said. But we fouled a lot. Some of those were fouls. Some of those were them jumping into us. But I'm not going to cry about that.
The game was the second of a four-game road stretch to open the season for Miami.
Up next is No.17 Tennessee in Knoxville on Dec. 1, followed by a game at Wisconsin-Green Bay.
