COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP — An off-duty, rookie Cincinnati police officer on his way home from work hit and killed a jogger Thursday morning when he drove off Wooster Pike and onto a sidewalk.

Donald Scalf, 25, was charged with involuntary manslaughter after the 8:10 a.m. accident that occurred within sight of his apartment in the 8200 block of Wooster Pike, Columbia Township.

Lloyd Swaringer, 45, of Wooster Pike, was taken by helicopter to University Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Mr. Swaringer had been jogging east on Wooster Pike when Officer Scalf's 1994 Toyota Camry swerved onto the sidewalk near Newtown Road and hit him from behind, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators haven't determined why Officer Scalf veered off the road, said Lt. Nick Coyle of the sheriff's office. There was no indication alcohol was involved, according to the sheriff's office.

Officer Scalf, who has been on the police force since January, wasn't injured. He works in District 3, which covers west- side neighborhoods including English Woods, North Fairmount, South Fairmount, Price Hill, Riverside, Sayler Park, Sedamsville and Westwood.

He remained at the Hamilton County Justice Center Thursday. Police supervisors hadn't decided Thursday whether to suspend Officer Scalf from police duties.
