Warren Co. United Way leader feted
MASON Theresa Schulte, chairman of the 1999 Warren County United Way campaign, was honored this week for her service and leadership in the organization's fund-raising effort this year.
Mrs. Schulte, Mason's clerk of council and a 15-year resident, was awarded a plaque by United Way Executive Director Jim Pottebaum at Monday's regular council meeting.
This was a difficult year for the campaign as we started out 7 percent (about $120,000) in the hole because of a couple of companies cutting back and downsizing and another moving out of the community, said Mr. Pottebaum. But despite that we were able to obtain our goal and so much of the credit goes to (Mrs.) Schulte.
He credited Ms. Schulte's aggressiveness in gathering contributions with exceeding the organization's goal of $1.88 million for a 4.5 percent increase. Last year, the Warren County United Way collected $1.82 million.
Man accused of killing teen-age girlfriend
LORAIN, Ohio An 18-year-old is accused of killing a girl he dated. Her body was found in a burning field about 25 yards from his home.
Henry Maldonado is charged with murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence, Lt. Rich Resendez said.
Firefighters called to extinguish a brush fire on Tuesday night found the body of Virginia Velez, 15, who was wearing only undergarments, socks and one shoe.
The fire may have been set to burn evidence, police said.
The cause of death and a motive remained uncertain.
Ruling favors teen expelled for toy gun
BEDFORD A high school junior expelled last month when a toy gun was found in his vehicle must be allowed to return to class on Monday, a hearing officer ruled.
The Bedford High School hearing officer, John Burkholder, a retired attorney, ruled Wednesday in favor of Jordan Telling.
The boy and his mother, Gemma, filed a lawsuit last week to overturn the expulsion and block any record of it, fearing it might harm his chances of getting into college.
Student discipline records are not forwarded to colleges, according to school district spokeswoman Margaret Bierman. But the Tellings' attorney, Kenneth Myers, said Jordan could be hurt if forced to reveal it.
Jordan was disciplined Oct. 25, the day two shotgun shells were found in the parking lot. School officials searched lockers and inspected vehicles, and called police when they saw the toy gun in Jordan's truck.
Magazine salesman pleads guilty to rape
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A door-to-door subscription salesman could face up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to rape in connection with an Aug. 4 attack on a woman in a West Lafayette apartment.
Antmargo Peacock, 23, of Albany, Ga., entered a plea agreement Wednesday in Tippecanoe Superior Court. He admitted he forced himself on the 19-year-old woman after knocking on her door to sell magazine subscriptions.
West Lafayette police learned that a subscription sales crew from WorldWide Readers Service had been working in the city that day.
Police located Mr. Peacock hours later at an Indianapolis motel.
As part of the plea agreement, Mr. Peacock must pay restitution to the victim, undergo sex offender treatment and he must have no contact with the victim. Charges of confinement and sexual battery will be dismissed.
A recommended prison sentence was not listed in the agreement. Mr. Peacock will be sentenced Dec. 22.
