Late Thursday, Kenton County police were still looking for a driver who fatally hit a young boy on Madison Pike on Wednesday just hours after a girl was killed along the road in a separate accident.
Joseph Longoria, 12, of Demossville died after being struck about 6:15 p.m. by two vehicles. He was riding his bicycle on Madison Pike, also called Ky. 17. The accident happened in the 15000 block, near Piner. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Joseph was a seventh-grader at Twenhofel Middle School and was active in sports.
Danielle Steffen, 10, of Independence died early Thursday at Children's Hospital Medical Center. She sustained broken legs and spinal injuries about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday when she was struck by a dump truck as she ran across Madison Pike, in the 5000 block in Independence.
Danielle's friend Alicia Collins, 9, was treated and released from St. Elizabeth Medical Center with an ankle injury.
Based on witness accounts, Joseph was hit by a 1988 Dodge pickup truck traveling north on Madison Pike. He was thrown from his bicycle, then hit by a second vehicle traveling in the southbound lane.
Kenton County Police Capt. Ed Butler said the driver of the second car, possibly a 1980s Chevrolet Monte Carlo, left the scene.
Darrell Strunk Jr., the driver of the pickup truck, stopped and called for help. He was not charged.
Anyone with information about the other vehicle is asked to call Detective Wayne Wallace at 356-3191.
Joseph was riding his bike to school to play basketball, said his mother, Brendeen.
The two girls injured in the Independence accident apparently ran in front of a 1977 International dump truck driven by James A. Rossman. Mr. Rossman, 50, of Ripley, Ohio, was not charged.
Danielle, Alicia and her sister Jacquelyn, 11, were walking to Summit View Elementary School, police said. Jacquelyn was not hit.
Nancy Murphy, Alicia and Jacquelyn's mother, said the three girls were best friends.
Family members Thursday placed a white cross in Danielle's memory at the scene of the accident.
