Panthers' mastery of Ducks continues with 4-3 OT win

BY JOHN P. WISE
Enquirer contributor

Louisville took only one shot in the overtime period Sunday, but it was all the Panthers needed to claim a 4-3 defeat of the Mighty Ducks at the Gardens Sunday.

Eric Boguniecki scored his second goal of the game with 1:39 left in the sudden death session. He raced down the right side and fired a shot that beat Cincinnati goalie Gregg Naumenko from the top of the circle. It was Naumenko's first loss in eight starts since Oct. 23.

“My first instinct always is to pass in a two-on-in like that,” Boguniecki said. “But the defender took the pass away, so I kind of shot it and, luckily for us, it went in. It shows hockey's a crazy game. We're down the whole game, then we end up winning it.”

Louisville is 8-3 on its AHL-longest 15-game road trip. Two of those wins have come at the Gardens. The Ducks fell to 7-5-4-2. Cincinnati is winless in four tries against Louisville this year.

“I'm disappointed we lost in overtime, but I can't complain,” Ducks coach Moe Mantha said. “Our guys worked hard. They gave a much better effort than (Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Panthers).”

The Ducks held leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2, but each time failed to protect those margins.

“Any time you're up in the third period in your own building, you're disappointed after you lose,” Ducks defender Dan Trebil said.

Added right wing Frank Banham: “We've got to learn to hold them when we're up in the last five minutes.”

Maxim Balmochnykh and Phil Audet scored on both of Cincinnati's power plays Sunday. Balmochnykh's goal was his first since he scored a pair of goals in the Oct. 2 season opener. Audet's goal came in the second period, when each team scored twice in a span of 3:37.

Torrey DiRoberto scored the other goal for the home team, which now travels for six straight games. Louisville ....... 0  2  1M14 Cincinnati ....... 1  2  0  03
