Suspect who left hospital caught

Motel workers tip off police

BY EARNEST WINSTON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

OXFORD TOWNSHIP — A London, Ky., man who led Fort Mitchell police on a chase after he fled during a routine traffic stop last month is back in police custody.

Dudley Caldwell, 49, was arrested about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at a Butler County motel on U.S. 27 by authorities acting on a tip from motel employees, said Detective Jeff Riegert, narcotics supervisor for the Butler County sheriff's office.

Last month, Mr. Caldwell escaped police custody at University Hospital because authorities did not want to get stuck with his medical bills. The sheriff office's drug and vice investigations unit put Mr. Caldwell under surveillance following the tip. He was arrested as he tried to leave College View Motel. Alone at the time of his arrest, Mr. Caldwell was using crutches to help him walk, because of a broken hip he sustained when he rammed his Mustang into a utility pole during the police chase.

Using a search warrant, Detective Riegert said, authorities found 12.59 pounds of marijuana in Mr. Caldwell's room. For his latest arrest, Mr. Caldwell faces drug abuse and drug paraphernalia charges. Bond was set at $10,300, said Deputy Sheriff Kim Peters.

Mr. Caldwell will likely appear in Butler County court today. The sheriff's office will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. at its offices to discuss details about Mr. Caldwell's arrest and existing warrants.

Mr. Caldwell also is wanted in Phoenix, Ariz., on drug and weapons charges. The U.S. marshal also has a warrant for his arrest.

Phoenix officials declined last month to have him detained at University Hospital. Fort Mitchell police, who chased Mr. Caldwell down after he fled during a routine traffic stop, weren't aware of that decision.

Fort Mitchell officers worked out a plan with the Kenton County sheriff's office to have a deputy watch Mr. Caldwell while he was at St. Elizabeth Hospital. But when he was transferred to University Hospital across the state line, Kentucky authorities no longer had jurisdiction.
