Fire alarm saves man asleep

BY DAVID ECK

UNION TOWNSHIP — Firefighters say a working smoke detector likely saved the life of a man whose 3,000-square-foot Beckett Ridge house was destroyed by a fast-moving fire Tuesday evening.

Dan Clark, 30, was asleep in the basement of his home in the 5100 block of Eagle's Nest Court when the smoke detector awakened him, said Union Township Assistant Fire Chief Tony Goller. Mr. Clark, the only person home at the time, couldn't see because of smoke and followed a wall to safety.

“If it wasn't for a smoke detector, there was no way he would have gotten out of that house,” Assistant Chief Goller said. “Apparently his wife and kids were out Christmas shopping.”

Township firefighter Mark Hanmer, 29, of West Chester suffered a minor foot injury when a piece of wood from the house tore through his boot, Assistant Chief Goller said.

Fire crews were called to the home shortly before 8 p.m. and found the back of the house engulfed in flames, As sistant Chief Goller said.

“It was unbelievable how much fire there was,” he said. “Very little of the back wall is standing.”

The loss is estimated at $300,000, and the fire remains under investigation. Fire investigators used a Butler County sheriff's helicopter Wednesday to take aerial photos of the ruined home trying to determine a cause, but it is not considered suspect, Assistant Chief Goller said.

Four Union Township fire companies spent about four hours on the scene.
