NKU grad's neighbor: Didn't mean to kill her
The Associated Press
ORLANDO, Fla. An apartment maintenance man accused of killing an aspiring actress from Northern Kentucky who lived in his building was drunk and didn't mean to cause her death, his defense attorney argued Wednesday during opening statements in his murder trial.
Randy Montgomery, 21, is charged with first-degree murder and attempted burglary in the death of 24-year-old Carlie Schulenberg, an actress who worked on a TV series for preschoolers for Lightpoint Enter tainment at Disney-MGM Studios. He faces life in prison if convicted.
Mr. Montgomery lived a few doors from Ms. Schulenberg's apartment.
He was arrested after he called deputies and said he was going to kill himself. He told them he remembered nothing of the Dec. 30 killing.
There was no thought ahead of time; it was just a horrible, horrible mistake, defense attorney William Hancock told jurors.
Ms. Schulenberg had recently visited family in Kentucky. She grew up in Alexandria and graduated from Northern Kentucky University.
Deputies found her body last New Year's Eve after forcing their way into the locked bedroom. Ms. Schulenberg's mother, Connie Ward, had been unable to reach her daughter.
She had been stabbed multiple times in the head and chest.
Prosecutor Jeff Ashton told jurors that the crime was their worst nightmare, being attacked in your bed in the middle of the night.
He said the trial would likely never explain why it happened.
Don't wait for it. Don't expect it, Mr. Ashton said. When this trial is over, you still won't know.
