No. 5 Shelby County downs No. 9 Brossart

BY RAY SCHAEFER
Enquirer contributor

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Shelby County showed Bishop Brossart Saturday there is a sizeable gap between the fifth-best girls basketball team in Kentucky and the ninth-best.

Senior guard Samantha Newton's 22 points and 16 points, and 12 rebounds from senior center Lenita White helped the No.5 Lady Rockets to a 65-58 win at the Lady Defender Classic at Bryan Station High School.

Though Brossart (2-2), ranked ninth in the state, fell behind by as many as 23, the Lady 'Stangs outscored Shelby County 38-25 in the second half.

“The final score told me that we're in the ballpark,” coach Ray Kues said. “If (Shelby County is) rated fifth, maybe being rated ninth is justified, because we could have easily given up and lost by 40 points.”

Senior center Lisa Henke, who scored a career-high 20 points, was a more severe critic.

“I don't think we're that great yet,” Henke said. “We're not together yet.”

Saturday revealed one thing Kues already knew: Someone other than junior guard Katie Schwegmann will have to score. Schwegmann scored 17 points, but she was 4-of-13 from the field, and junior guard Carrie Clift added 13.

There were two major prob lems: The Lady 'Stangs committed 18 turnovers (sophomore guard Courtney Clark had six and Schwegmann had five); and they shot just 20-of-51 for the game, including 3-of-13 from 3-point range.

Brossart lost control Saturday in the first quarter.

Henke's basket with 5:11 to go in the first tied the game at 8-8, but Shelby County (5-0) finished the quarter with a 12-2 run. Junior forward Dana Crittendon's eight points (she finished with 12) led the streak.

Things weren't any better for Brossart in the next eight minutes, and not just because Schwegmann managed just six points in the half and was 1-of-5 from the field.

The Lady 'Stangs didn't get another field goal until Henke's with 5:00 left in the half, and they were 6-of-22 from the field. Add to that Brossart's 13 turnovers and 0-of-4 from 3-point range.

“That took us out of thinking that we even had a possibility of winning,” Kues said. “We started questioning our own ability. I thought it was pretty obvious that we lost confidence whether we could beat this team or not.”

        BISHOP BROSSART (58) — Johnson 0-0 0-0 0, Phillips 4-8 0-2 8, Schwegmann 4-13 9-11 17, Otto 0-1 0-0 0, Clift 4-3 13, Schultz 0-0 0-0 0, Ritter 0-0 0-0 0, Henke 8-12 3-5 20. Totals: 20-51 15-21 58.

        SHELBY COUNTY (65) — Newton 11-19 0-0 22, Johnson 5-8 1-1 11, Anglin 0-1 0-0 0, Slaughter 1-3 0-0 2, Crittendon 6-11 0-0 12, Watts 0-1 0-0 0, Marshall 0-1 0-0 0, Kerchner 1-3 0-0 2, White 8-8 0-0 16. Totals: 32-55 1-1 65.

        Bishop Brossart ....... 12   8  17  21—58

        Shelby County ....... 20  20  16   9—65

        Three-point field goals: BB 3-of-13 (Schwegmann 0-2, Clark 0-2, Clift 2-7, Henke 1-2); SC 0-of-3 (Newton 0-2, Marshall 0-1). Records: BB 2-2, SC 5-0.
