1,900 Oak Hills students stay home after bomb threat

The Cincinnati Enquirer

GREEN TOWNSHIP — Most of Oak Hills High School's 2,500 students stayed away from classes Wednesday because of a bomb threat made last week.

A message written on a boys' bathroom stall wall read “12/15/99 boom,” and set precautionary measures in motion, school officials said.

An in-school public address announcement warned students about the threat, and a letter was sent home to parents.

As a result, 1,900 students were absent, said Gina Gentry-Fletcher, Oak Hills Local School District communications coordinator.

There were no incidents Wednes day. The only problem came from jammed phone lines from parents reporting students' absences, Principal Jim Williamson said.

“Some teachers did teach. Others opted not to ... so kids wouldn't miss out,” Mrs. Gentry-Fletcher said.

Before students arrived Wednesday, Green Township police and Hamilton County sheriff's deputies combed the school with bomb-sniffing dogs. Nothing was found, Green Township Police Sgt. Gary Wilhelm said.

In an unrelated incident, Mrs. Gentry-Fletcher said a Wyoming student was arrested after showing a toy pellet gun at an Oak Hills swim meet.
