Stuff 104, Baltimore 96

BY PETE HOLTERMANN
Enquirer contributor

The Cincinnati Stuff held off a fourth-quarter surge by the Baltimore BayRunners on Wednesday night, winning 104-96 win to remain the only undefeated team in the International Basketball League.

The Stuff (6-0) led 81-68 with 10 minutes left in the game, but Baltimore used a 10-0 run to get within two, 80-78.

Cincinnati responded with a 7-0 run of its own to make it 88-78 with 5:39 left, and Wayne Turner put the game away for Cincinnati with a 3-pointer from the right corner at the 3:09 mark, giving the Stuff a 93-83 lead.

Baltimore got within four in the final minute, but was forced to foul, and Cincinnati iced the game from the free-throw line.

Turner and Tremaine Fowlkes led Cincinnati with 24 points each. Eric Taylor added 12 points and nine rebounds.

“In the second half, we let our defensive intensity slip,” Stuff coach Joby Wright said. “We just kind of allowed them to get back into the thing. It showed how young we are.”

The Stuff was in control for the first three quarters. Baltimore got its only lead two and a half minutes into the contest on a three-point play from Mark Blount. Eric Taylor put the Stuff back in the lead on the next possession with a baseline drive and lay-in.

Cincinnati took a 55-40 lead at halftime.

Cincinnati was able to score easily against the BayRunners. The Stuff had 31 fast-break points, and scored half their points from the paint.

“We wanted to run on them,” Fowlkes said. “We're young. We want to use our athleticism to our advantage.”

The Stuff outrebounded the BayRunners 52-43, led by 10 each from Courtney James and Soumaila Samake.

Baltimore found success behind the 3-point arc in the third quarter, with Shawnta Rogers hitting five of the BayRunners' six in the period. But the Stuff held off the attack, and led 79-68 after three quarters.

Rogers scored 28 points for Baltimore, including 26 in the second half points. He made seven 3-pointers.
