Head Start to weigh report on contract

Strike vote next if it's rejected

The Cincinnati Enquirer

The 160 staff members of Hamilton County Head Start program will meet tonight to consider a report on their continuing contract negotiations.

If either the union members of Service Employees International Union, District 925, or Head Start Program officials reject the recommendations of the neutral fact-finder, union members will vote on whether to authorize a strike, Deborah Schneider, union president, said Sunday night.

Contract negotiations have been continuing since June.

The unresolved areas include wages, staffing language and union and management rights, union officials said.

Union officials say staff salaries, which range from $8,000 to $18,000 and average $13,000, are several thousand dollars a year less than comparable agencies in the region.

Head Start is a preschool pro gram funded by the state and federal governments.

Union members, including teachers, family-support advocates, health and nutrition specialists, and support staff, provide child-care services to about 1,500 families in Hamilton County.
