Missed shots
Unknown suspect. April 29, 1999. Corryville. Officer Kenneth Baker said he fired two shots at an aggravated robbery suspect who pointed a gun at him during a foot chase. The officer was exonerated.
Ciro Alfonzo, 46. Feb. 28, 1999. Winton Terrace. Spc. Cecilia Vincent Charron said she fired at Mr. Alfonzo, who was sleeping in his van in a parking lot, because she thought he lunged at her partner. The division found Spc. Charron should not have shot because there was no real and immediate danger. Police also said both officers made several mistakes when they approached the van. Officer Bookman was counseled by supervisors and Officer Charron received discipline and training.
Damon Gatewood, 23. Feb. 15, 1999. Price Hill. Sgt. Michael Fern and Officer Dwayne Wilson said they fired at Mr. Gatewood, a drug suspect, five times after he refused to stop and threatened the officers with his car. The officers were cleared in the shooting but were counseled for their approach, shooting with each other in the crossfire. Officer Wilson, whose four shots missed, was ordered to firearms training.
Unknown suspect. Oct. 11, 1998. Clifton. Officer Robert Blane Jorg said he fired five shots at an intruder in his home. The officer was exonerated.
Unknown suspect. May 5, 1998. Delhi Township. Officer Kevin Ballman said fired four shots at a man trying to driving away after breaking into the officer's car. No known injuries. The officer's supervisor counseled him for putting himself in danger when he ran into the middle of the street and for using deadly force in a property crime.
Terrence A. Monday, 26. Jan. 20, 1995. Millvale. Officer Dominic Guilliford said he and two other plain clothes officers tried to stop Mr. Monday, a drug suspect. They requested, but didn't wait for, uniformed officers and approached Mr. Monday's car. An officer put a police badge to the closed car window and asked to talk to Mr. Monday, who put the car in reverse and tried to back away hitting another officer behind the car. Officer Guilliford said he fired two shots into the car, which missed Mr. Monday, to save the officer's life. Police later caught Mr. Monday, who said he thought the ununiformed officers were robbers. The officer was exonerated.
Kathleen Jones, 47. Dec. 31, 1994. Pleasant Ridge. Officer Dawn Keating fired four shots at close range at this woman who was brandishing a 14-inch butcher knife. The shots missed and the officer was ordered to firearms training.
Four juveniles. Dec. 9, 1994. Fairmount. Officer Brian Coates said he fired one shot in a dark basement during an aggravated robbery investigation. The juvenile suspects were hiding in the basement. The pop was a light bulb. The officer was exonerated.
Ward Wardell, 34. Oct. 27, 1994. Walnut Hills. Officer Gene Seay said he fired two shots at Mr. Wardell, a drug suspect who allegedly tried to run the officer down with a car. Officer Seay was standing near the middle of the street when he fired. The shots hit the hood of the car and Mr. Wardell was arrested without incident. Mr. Wardell told police that he was "just trying to get away, not hit or injure the officer.' The officer was exonerated.
Grant Crawford, 29. March 27, 1994. Avondale. Officer David Landesberg said he fired four shots at Mr. Crawford after the suspect pulled a 9mm from his waistband.
