$13.3M to fund road, sewer work

BY LEW MOORES
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Nineteen communities in Hamilton County are due to receive close to $13.3 million in state grants and loans next summer to pay for widening and reconstructing roads, and improving sewer systems.

The grants and loans will help pay for more than $35 million in capital improvement projects throughout the county.

Approval of 28 projects for the 19 communities — which include Cincinnati, the county and 17 suburban communities — was given by the District 2 Integrating Committee, which recommends the funding to the Ohio Public Works Commission.

The grants and loans are known as State Capital Improvement Program (SCIP) and Local Transportation Improvement Program (LTIP) grants.

More than $7 million of the $13.3 million in grants and loans have been awarded to 17 communities. Cincinnati is get ting more than $4 million to pay for seven projects. Hamilton County is getting $1.57 million to pay for two projects.

Last year, five suburban communities were awarded SCIP and LTIP grants and loans totaling $5.67 million. But close to $5 million of that was for loans for water treatment plant work in Wyoming and Lockland.

“We had a big cross-section of communities that got funded this year,” said Joe Cottrill, who works for the Hamilton County Engineer's Office and is liaison officer between the integrating committee and the communities. “That is not by design. It's just the way the ratings came out.”

Most communities say that without the help of SCIP and LTIP funds, the road and infrastructure work in their communities would not get done, or be done piecemeal.

This is the 14th round of SCIP and LTIP funding for communities around the state.

The money allocated for each county in the state is determined by population.
