How to prepare for Y2K
Should you sleep in your car on Friday night? Should you stockpile water and food and blankets and candles?
Should you, as one Internet Web site half-jokingly suggested, learn to use the Abacus to avoid glitches with adding and subtracting numbers?
While some suggest that preparing for the end of the millennium is like preparing for a major storm or a long holiday weekend, others have gone farther.
If you're not convinced by the Y2K mania, some suggestions might seem silly, but here are some tips offered so far:
Stock three days' supply of food and water, along with blankets, sleeping bags, flashlights, batteries and an alternative heating source.
If you decide to withdraw money before Friday, do so in small increments. Also, make transactions discreetly and secure withdrawals in safe places, such as wall vaults.
Fill prescriptions ahead of time.
Collect records of medical services and supplies. Keep paper copies of bank transactions and major purchases.
Avoid using the phone around midnight Friday unless it's an emergency.
Be wary of Y2K scam artists.
Pay some major bills a little early. Avoid major transactions until about a week after New Year's Day.
If you bank online, make sure your computer is Y2K compliant. Most computer and software manufacturers have Web sites that address their products' Y2K readiness.
Don't give account information on the phone to anyone unless you make the call.
Above all, don't panic.
