Water works imposter offers bogus Y2K device

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati officials are warning residents not to be fooled by a man posing as a water works employee who is selling a bogus device to prevent interruption of water service in the event of a Y2K problem.

Several Avondale residents Thursday reported that a man — dressed in a black trench coat and driving a maroon van — offered to sell them the device for a $3,200 cash advance, claiming city crews would deliver it today.

“This person is not a water works employee,” water works spokeswoman Ann Turner said in a press release Thursday. “Cincinnati Water Works' operations are Y2K compliant and we do not anticipate any water service interruption.”

Cincinnati Water Works employees who routinely go into customers' homes and businesses carry photo identification cards and wear blue uniforms with water works patches sewn on. They drive white vehicles marked with the city seal, a vehicle number and the words “Water Works.”

To verify whether a person is an employee, residents can call the city's 24-hour emergency number, 591-7900, or call 911 if the situation seems dangerous.
