Fire heavily damages Indian Hill house
BY WALT SCHAEFER
The Cincinnati Enquirer
INDIAN HILL A fire early Tuesday caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to a house under renovation on Stone Barn Road.
The house, bought in October by Matt and Marianne Castrucci of West Chester, was engulfed in flames when Madeira-Indian Hill firefighters arrived.
The house is at the end of the quiet dead-end lane off Indian Hill Road in this affluent eastern Hamilton County community.
Tom Woodward, an Enquirer carrier, saw the fire as he was delivering the morning paper and called 911.
It was an extremely hot fire. Most of the house was involved when I saw it, said Mr. Woodward of Mount Carmel. It really went up fast. I heard glass shatter ... and popping ... and the roof started to collapse.
Mr. Castrucci, owner of the Castrucci Auto Mall of Day ton, in Centerville near Dayton Mall, viewed the scene Tuesday morning. He said he and his wife their families are both originally from Indian Hill bought the house to renovate so they could move back to their hometown.
We were just about two months from finishing (renovations), Mr. Castrucci said. No one was home when the fire broke out at about 3:30 a.m.
Madeira-Indian Hill Fire Capt. George Hann said it appears the blaze started in the south end of the single story, brick ranch-style home and spread rapidly.
Capt. Hann said firefighters had the blaze controlled within 75 minutes.
Cause of the blaze remains under investigation. However, Fire Chief Steve Ashbrock said investigators have not eliminated the possibility of a lightning strike during the heavy overnight storms. The chief said other causes are being considered.
