Santana works his magic with 10 Grammy nominations
BY LARRY NAGER
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Carlos Santana, up for 10 awards, dominated Tuesday's list of nominees for the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards.
Nominations garnered by the veteran guitarist's multi-platinum comeback album, Supernatural, included song of the year for Smooth, his record-breaking No. 1 hit.
That songwriter's award would go to former Cincinnatian Itaal Shur and Matchbox 20 frontman Rob Thomas. Mr. Shur, on vacation in Brazil, was unavailable for comment.
Supernatural was nominated for both album of the year and rock album. Smooth is a nominee for record of the year and best pop vocal collaboration.
Mr. Santana's collaboration with Eric Clapton, The Calling, is up for best rock instrumental.
That's the sole Grammy category in which the 52-year-old Santana has been honored in three decades of recording. Including that 1988 win, he had only five Grammy nominations before Tuesday's announcement.
TLC received six nominations, including album of the year (Fanmail), record of the year (No Scrubs) and group pop performance and song of the year (Unpretty). The R&B trio records for LaFace, the label owned by former Cincinnatians L.A. Reid and Babyface.
Classical conductor Pierre Boulez was another top nominee, with six nominations.
Record of the year nominees included Backstreet Boys' I Want it That Way; Cher's Believe; and Ricky Martin's Livin' La Vida Loca.
Album of the year nominees included Backstreet Boys' Millennium, Dixie Chicks' Fly and jazz singer/pianist Diane Krall's When I Look in Your Eyes.
Song of the year nominees included I Want It That Way, Livin' La Vida Loca and You've Got a Way.
Best new artist nominees ranged from teen-pop princesses Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera to R&B belter Macy Gray, metal/rapper Kid Rock and blueswoman Susan Tedeschi.
Pop album nominees included Millennium (Backstreet Boys), Believe (Cher), Ricky Martin, Mirrorball (Sarah McLachlan) and Brand New Day (Sting).
The rock album category is another multi-generational crew, including Supernatural, Echo (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Significant Other (Limp Bizkit), Breakdown (Melissa Etheridge) and Californication (Red Hot Chili Peppers).
Asleep at the Wheel earned five nominations; Backstreet Boys, Dixie Chicks, Emmylou Harris, Lauryn Hill and Whitney Houston each had four.
Best engineered classical album nominees included Mahler Symphony No. 3 by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Jesus Lopez-Cobos conducting.
98` was shut out, despite the Ohio quartet's big year with such hits as I Do (Cherish You) and its 3 million-selling 98`... and Rising CD. Conductors Erich Kunzel and Keith Lockhart also were ignored.
On Feb. 23, the 42nd annual Grammy Awards will honor winners in in 98 categories at ceremonies in Los Angeles broadcast live locally on Channels 12 and 7.
