Three Cincinnatians honored as arts patrons

Longtime arts philanthropists Stan and Mickey Kaplan and Cincinnati String Academy founder Paul Bartel will receive the Governor's Award for the Arts, co-recipients in the arts patron category.
Dr. Kaplan is chairman of the Contemporary Arts Center board of trustees and has taken a leading role in creating a new home for the center. He and his wife have pledged $2 million toward it. Mrs. Kaplan, a longtime trustee of WCET-TV, Channel 48, has been an Action Auction volunteer for more than 30 years.
The Kaplans have served on the boards of Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Arts Association, Cincinnati Institute of Fine Arts, Cincinnati Art Museum, Playhouse in the Park, Ensemble Theatre and the School for Creative and Performing Arts.
In 1995, violinist and former public school string teacher Paul Bartel signed a mortgage on a former Masonic lodge in Wyoming, renovated it and opened it as an arts center. He simultaneously founded the Cincinnati String Academy.
The academy has grown to an enrollment of more than 400 students, from preschool through retired adults. It has a faculty of 25 and two student orchestras.
The community arts center is also home to a dance center, an art studio and a resident community orchestra.
The Kaplans and Mr. Bartel are among nine winners of the 2000 Governor's Awards for the Arts from across the state. Awards will be presented March 22 at the Arts Day luncheon in Columbus. For more information contact Ohio Arts Council, (614) 466-2613.
