Boater pleads not guilty in deaths

The Cincinnati Enquirer

NEWPORT — A Hyde Park man entered not guilty pleas Thursday in Campbell Circuit Court to charges that he caused the deaths of three people in an Ohio River boating accident in August.

Brian Brunen, 32, faces three counts of second-degree manslaughter, one count of second-degree assault, one count of fourth-degree assault and one count of operating a motorboat under the influence.

Authorities say Mr. Brunen was intoxicated when his speedboat ran into a boat operated by Scott Martini near the Watertown Marina Aug. 16.

Mr. Martini and his wife, Pamela, of Dearborn County, and passenger Ken Middendorf of Cleves were thrown from the boat and drowned.

Mr. Middendorf's wife, Kim, was injured, as was a passenger in Mr. Brunen's boat, Nicole Purvis.

The Martinis and Middendorfs were returning from a Riverbend concert.

Kentucky State Water Patrol Officer Doug Bryant, who investigated the crash, said the Martini boat was struck from behind by Mr. Brunen's boat. That spun the Martini craft and it was hit again in the bow.

If convicted on all charges, Mr. Brunen could face up to 40 years in prison.
