Sewer stench forces office to close

BY SHEILA McLAUGHLIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LEBANON — The city's dirty business will keep Warren County's new auto title office closed for at least the next week.

The office, opened in October at 19 Dave Ave., was flooded by raw sewage in a backup caused by unusually heavy rains Monday evening, Clerk of Courts James Spaeth said.

“It blew out the toilets and the drain in the furnace room. An infiltration of storm water into the sanitary sewer backed it up. Sanitary is not exactly what I call it,” Mr. Spaeth said Thursday.

Smelly, dark water — just enough to cover the new car peting — greeted workers as they arrived for work Tuesday.

Files, all untouched by the contaminated water, as well as furniture and computer equipment, were salvaged.

The office is expected to be closed at least until Jan. 14 while the floors dry, are disinfected, and 3,000 square feet of new carpet is laid, Mr. Spaeth said.

Until then, residents should visit auto title offices at 770 Reading Road in Mason, and 345 Main St. in Franklin. Those offices are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mr. Spaeth said he has doubled staff in those offices to handle the additional business there.
