        HAMILTON — Some members of a committee discussing possible smoking regulations in public places here found themselves on opposite sides Thursday. Health advocates were pushing for an outright ban, while some restaurant owners urged a more cautious approach.

Board loosens pension standards
        Disputing claims that a plan to let Cincinnati employees retire early would cause a mass exodus and cost millions, the city's retirement board voted Thursday to lessen eligibility standards.

Boater pleads not guilty in deaths
        NEWPORT — A Hyde Park man entered not guilty pleas Thursday in Campbell Circuit Court to charges that he caused the deaths of three people in an Ohio River boating accident in August.

Driver's alcohol level cited in teacher's death
        NEWPORT — Jill Ott's blood alcohol level was more than 21/2 times the legal limit on Dec. 26 when her car struck a neighbor who later died, Holy Cross High School teacher Susan Schlarman, according to court testimony.

        Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken acknowledged Thursday that the state of the city's public schools will hinder his “rebirth” plans for Cincinnati.
