Gender equity to be discussed at Beechwood

FORT MITCHELL Members of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association will visit Beechwood High School Monday to discuss gender equity in sports with school officials, parents and the public.
The meeting is part of the athletic association's five-year plan to help schools and com munities comply with Title IX, the federal law that calls for equal athletic and academic opportunities for girls and boys.
We're not targeting any schools, said Brigid DeVries, KHSAA executive assistant commissioner. The goal is to help schools be in compliance.
The association plans to visit 20 percent of its membership each year during the next five years. There are 283 member schools.
Monday's 6:30 p.m. meeting in the school library will allow the public to ask questions about Title IX compliance of state and Beechwood school officials.
Fred Bassett, Beechwood Schools superintendent, said the KHSAA staff would speak with the district's principals and athletic director to make sure everyone is aware of Ti tle IX.
They will help schools set up methods of ensuring that schools are complying with the law's provisions, Dr. Bassett said.
Beechwood already has a plan in place and was found to be in compliance by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights after a group of parents filed complaints last year.
