St. X slips past Moeller to stay unbeaten

        Steve Callahan and Steve Sollmann made crucial free throws in the final two minutes as St. Xavier remained undefeated with a 49-45 victory over Moeller in a Greater Catholic League game at Moeller on Friday night.

        In a defensive struggle, the Bombers went into a stall midway through the fourth quarter holding a 43-39 lead.

        Forced to foul, Moeller chose St. X junior guard Callahan, who sank 3-of-4 from the line and added a field goal. Sollmann closed out the scoring with two free throws to clinch the victory.

        Matt Sylvester was the bright spot for Moeller, scoring a game-high 26 points.

        St. Xavier hosts Elder on Friday with the winner taking over sole possession of first place in the Greater Catholic League South Division.

        • Madeira 59, Indian Hill 30 — The Mustangs took over sole possession of first place in the Cincinnati Hills League with the victory.

        Both team entered the game with 3-0 records in the CHL and Madeira used an 18-7 run in the third quarter to break open a close game.

        Leading 28-23 at halftime, the Mustangs went on an 18-7 run, using a full-court press and balanced scoring with Rob Hern showing the way with six points.

        Kevin Welch, Indian Hill's 6-foot-8 senior center, was a bright spot for the Braves, scoring 18 points.

        Madeira was led by Tim Dooley and Brandon Konieczka, who each scored 11 points.

        After hitting a 3-pointer, Lehman stole the ball in the backcourt and scored on a layup. The outburst gave Wyoming a 12-point lead with 1:30 remaining.

        Lehman scored a game-high 19 points. Stewart Patch added 13. Adam Monday, Wyoming's leading scorer, was held to 10 points (10 below his season average), but contributed 11 rebounds and six blocks.
