Moeller wrestles for national recognition

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Moeller's undefeated wrestling team advanced to the semifinal round of the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va., with two victories on Friday at the Hampton Coliseum.

The Crusaders meet nationally ranked (No.9) Great Bridge, Va., 2 p.m. today in the semifinals with the winner advancing to the championship against fourth-ranked Calvary Chapel (Calif.) or 24th-ranked Camden (N.J.) Catholic at 8:30 p.m.

In Friday's opening match, the Crusaders defeated Massapequa (N.Y.) 49-16 and followed with a 39-22 victory over Hickory (Va.)

“We had a great day,” Moeller coach Jeff Gaier said. “Jeff Ostholthoff (160 pounds) beat the defending Virginia state champion (Phil Crockford), which was a big victory for us.”

Ranked No.1 in Virginia, Great Bridge will be a tough test for Moeller in the semifinals.

If Moeller continues to win, the Crusaders could crack the national Top 25 (USA Today Wrestling Magazine) and in the process, become the first Cincinnati team to make this elite ranking.
