N.Ky. boys basketball roundup

Grieving Roberts leads Williamstown

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Two hours after the death of his father, Chad Roberts was back on the basketball court. In the fourth quarter, he showed why he had decided to play.

Roberts, a Williamstown High School senior, scored eight points in a decisive fourth-quarter rally to help the Demons beat Ludlow 63-39 at Williamstown. He totaled 10 points and 11 rebounds.

“Greg Roberts ran a Junior Pro (youth) basketball team for 25 years,” Williamstown coach Tim Mefford. “He loved the game of basketball. Chad and his family felt that's where he'd want Chad to be, so he made the decision to play. And he played real well.”

Greg Roberts, who had been in a coma since suffering a stroke Christmas Eve, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday. He had been taken off life support earlier in the week.

“We had the (Williamstown Kiwanis Holiday Classic) tournament that we dedicated to Greg, and we played real well and won that,” Mefford said. “Tonight we had a moment of silence again for the family. The whole team felt the loss and rallied around Chad to help him.”
