N.Ky. girls basketball roundup

Young Boone team reaches semifinals

BY MARK SCHMETZER

FLORENCE — Nell Fookes didn't care who her Boone County girls basketball team would play this morning in the Northern Kentucky Basketball Classic semifinals.

The Lady Rebels coach was just happy her youthful team would get more experience.

“This gives us another game,” Fookes said. “We need another game.”

Boone County, which has no seniors and just four juniors on its roster, got 27 points from junior Ciara Henderson and 13 from classmate Ashley Grobmyer to beat the Sydney (Australia) Sharks 52-40 in what turned out to be the championship game of Pool D.

Jess Garvey led the Sharks with 18 points, half on 3-point shots.

Boone County will play Pool C champion Highlands in the semifinals at 10:30a.m. today.

Bishop Brossart, the Pool A champion, is scheduled to meet Pool B champion Wayne County at 9a.m., and the championship game is scheduled for 7:30p.m. today. All three games will be played at Brossart.

Boone County (6-5) had to win three games in three days to capture its pool title.

“These three games have been big for us,” Fookes said. “The difference in the way we've played the last three days has been two sophomores — Annie Boswell and Angie Martin — and two freshmen — Amber Janneck and Abby Newhouse. We just decided to play them. We needed the depth. They have a lot of athletic ability, and they've pushed the other players.”

Boswell replaced another sophomore, Chrissy Isaac, in the starting lineup, but it was Isaac who came off the bench to score five points after Sydney (5-6), a club team of high school-age girls that has been traveling around Kentucky, opened an early 10-4 lead.

Then Henderson took over. The 5-foot-9 guard scored 20 of her points in the second and third quarters, including 12 Boone County points in a row during one stretch, to help the Lady Rebels take control. Henderson now has scored 81 points in the tournament.

“She played a total game tonight,” Fookes said. “This was one of her best games. She shot well and rebounded well, but when she was double- and triple-teamed, she found the open man.”

That was Grobmyer in the fourth quarter. The 5-9 forward scored six of her points down the stretch, including a layup on a drive through traffic along the baseline after Sydney had whittled a nine-point deficit to four points.

“She runs the floor real well,” Fookes said. “She gets a little hyperactive at times, but she's very athletic.”
