Madeira wrestlers win own tourney

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Madeira Invitational has been one of the strongest Divisions II and III wrestling meets the past 25 years, but going into this weekend, the host team had won it only once, in 1986.

The Mustangs, a Division III school, reversed this trend on Saturday, scoring 225 points to take the title. Franklin (Division II) finished second with 2051/2 points and Northern Kentucky power Campbell County third with 188 in the 20-team meet.

“We wanted to win for our coach (Bob Kearns),” Madeira sophomore Shawn Burroughs, the 112-pound champion, said. “That was the team's goal and everybody knew they had to do their part.”

Madeira, which is undefeated against local competition, clung to a 194-189 lead over Franklin entering the championship round. Madeira had four wrestlers in the finals, Franklin had five.

All of Madeira's finalists claimed championships and seven of its eight wrestlers in the consolation round finished with wins. Only three of five Franklin wrestlers in the championship round took home titles.

Here is a look at the championship matches:

        • 103: Kris Kuykendall, Madeira (14-0) d. Matt Franklin, Franklin (14-2) 9-2 — Kuykendall took a 5-1 lead after two periods and allowed an escape. “I kept moving and looked for a chance to take a shot,” he said.

        • 112: Shawn Burroughs, Madeira (14-2) md. Bobby Wells, New Richmond (14-7) 16-1 — Burroughs took a quick 7-1 lead and was never challenged.

        • 119: John Kremer, Franklin (13-3) p. Jack Follick, Reading (7-4) 3:38 — Trailing 5-2 early in the second period, Kremer scored on an escape and takedown before pinning Follick.

        • 125: Chris Williams, Taylor (11-2) d. Josh Kenneweg, Campbell County (20-3) 7-4 — Williams took a 4-0 lead in the first period. “I don't consider this an upset,” Williams said. “I don't go into any match thinking I'll lose.”

        • 130: Zack Hensley, Lemon Monroe (11-2) d. Rick Dawn, Campbell County (18-6) 7-2 — Hensley took a 5-0 lead in the first period on a takedown and near-pin.

        • 135: Josh Correll, Taylor (12-0) d. D.J. Engel, Reading (11-3) 3-2 — Trailing 2-1 with eight seconds remaining, Correll scored a take-down at the buzzer. “I got him in a head-lock and then used a spiral move to take him down,” Correll said.

        • 140: Tim Kelly, Reading (11-1) d. James Daugherty, Williamsburg (8-1) 6-3 — Kelly scored two takedowns and an escape in the third period.

        • 145: Robbie Phillips, Bethel-Tate (12-0) d. Tyler Hardy, Campbell County (21-1) 14-8 — Phillips took a 5-2 lead after one period.

        • 152: Brian McClelland, Franklin (14-3) d. Nathan Schmidt, Campbell County (21-1) 5-3 — McClelland scored a takedown with 14 seconds remaining.

        • 160: Gary Blair, Reading (11-1) d. Josh Reamer, Taylor (12-0) 9-3 — Blair scored four takedowns.

        • 171: Casey McConnell, Summit Country Day (13-1) p. Daniel Watts, Franklin (9-7) 3:28 — McConnell took a 4-0 lead after the first period before registering the pin.

        • 189: John Cardoza, Madeira (14-2) d. David Snowden, Franklin (11-4) 9-2 — This victory wrapped up the team championship. Cardoza led 4-2 after the first period. “I knew going in that this was the last head-to-head match with Franklin and it was big,” Cardoza said.

        • 215: Ryan Pattison, Madeira (15-2) p. Jake Hughes, New Richmond (9-6) :49 — Pattison tied it with a reverse and followed with the pin.

        • Hwt.: Mike Ramsey, Campbell County (20-3) p. Ben Ryan, Lemon Monroe (8-4) 3:39 — Ramsey held a 4-1 lead before scoring the pin.
