OU's Esterkamp has career game
MIAMI NOTEBOOK
BY JOHN FAY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
OXFORD Miami coach Charlie Coles had a feeling Ohio's Steve Esterkamp was going to have a good game Saturday. After what Esterkamp did Wednesday against Kent, he couldn't have gotten any worse.
Esterkamp, making his first college start, was 0-for-10 against Kent.
After 0-for-10, you don't sleep much, Coles said. I thought he'd be good today.
Esterkamp, a 6-foot-6 freshman from LaSalle, was.
He scored a career-high 14 points seven of them in OU's critical 19-5 run in the second half to lead OU over Miami 57-54.
It feels good, said Esterkamp, who turned 19 Saturday, especially so close to home. It was crazy here today.
Esterkamp is the younger brother of Dave, a starter at Bowling Green.
Esterkamp came in averaging 4.6 points a game. Saturday was his third game in double figures.
More Cincinnati kids
Esterkamp was one of six Cincinnati players in the game Saturday.
Brandon Hunter and Jason Crawford, both of Withrow, scored 10 and four points respectively for OU.
Jason Grunkemeyer (Moeller) had 12 points for Miami. Mike Ensminger (Oak Hills) and Rich Allendorf (St.Xavier) had four points each for Miami.
Time change
The time of Miami's Feb. 12 home game with Bowling Green has been switched from 3 p.m. to noon, so it can be broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
